Volunteer Story: Meet Kenny

CP+ Volunteer Kenny

If you asked Kenny to describe Annerley Community Centre in three words, he’d say: “Outstanding, Excellent, Improving.”

Kenny first got involved because he wanted to connect with people he didn’t know and help build a community where everyone looks after each other.

“Make sure they look after each other, help each other out, be kind to them, make good friendship, be polite, make sure they have a good time, greet each person when they come in,” Kenny says.

Kenny has been volunteering at Annerley Community Centre since 2024 and keeps coming back because he loves being part of the community. “I love being here, to help people and make sure they are okay, do more activities, helping if they need anything. I just like to be a part of the community.”

On a day to day basis, you’ll often find Kenny helping set things up, cleaning up, providing general information, or referring community members to support. He also enjoys the fun side of community life,  playing games, doing artwork, crochet and craft, and even helping with food shopping for the centre.

When asked about a memory that stands out, Kenny highlights the gratitude he’s felt: “People I know at the Annerley Community Centre have been very grateful, they helped us so much.”

And for anyone considering volunteering, Kenny’s advice is heartfelt: “It is not easy to be a volunteer. You need to talk to someone if you are not quite sure about something, they can help out. Always be humble and curious.”
